In 1986 Jagdish Wagh founds Wagh Infrastructure, four years after taking his first independent contract. The firm begins with two people and one truck, working the residential contracts larger builders in Dombivli pass over. Meera Wagh keeps its books. The founding marks the point at which he stops being a contractor who takes work and becomes a builder who chooses it — a distinction the novel returns to whenever a decision goes badly.
